The Many Faces of Animal Cruelty and Neglect.

This cat was in absolute agony. The mass you see on his cheek is his eye. Of course the other is just as bad. Unsure of what exactly caused this, suspect substance was put into eyes. The fact that no medical care was given makes this a horrible case of abuse. Nothing could be done to save this cat.

BURNING KITTY
This little kitten was thrown into a pile of burning leaves. Along with other injuries he lost part of his ear. The owner witnessed this abomination and called the authorities. The young man was found guilty on animal cruelty charges and received probation.

THE EYE OF CHERRY
Cherry was a pitiful little kitten that was found in the road by one of our volunteers. She was taken immediately to the vets office where they thought that the eye might have a chance.
Later the eye ruptured and had to be removed. Cherry is now the beloved pet of the volunteer that found her and is in her forever home.

CHALUPA
This is Chalupa. Left in a rental house when the owners moved away, he had no food or water for an unknown amount of days. When he was brought in to the veterinarian, he only weighed 2 pounds. Because he was too weak to stand, he lay in his own urine and feces which caused the sores.
This picture was taken after 5 days of medical attention, food, love and shelter. He has already gained 1/2 pound. One of the vet techs at Culbreth, Carr, Watson Veterinary Clinic is going to make sure that he never suffers again for the rest of his life.
Chalupa has gone, his life shortened by the complications from starvation. His last years were warm, loved, and happy. Thank you Donna.

ANNIE (NOT THE MUSICAL)
Annie was unable to walk due to a condition that was brought upon by abuse/neglect. We called upon the community to help us fund her surgeries.
Annie is truly a miracle that we have been blessed to witness. She had her casts removed on Valentine's Day 2003 and she is doing beautifully. She is walking, running, and is also able to jump. Her local vet said she has done remarkably well, her legs are straight, strong, and she has regrowth of bone in both her legs.
Annie has the most amazing will to live that we have ever seen.

A RAY OF SUNSHINE
This little guy was found running down the street, no ID and unable to see where he was going. He ran out in front of one of our volunteers. After being cleaned up and groomed, we found he was occasionally around the face could have prevented this. He is now in a special needs home and will be lovingly cared for the rest of his life.

THE PROMISE
The wound on this dog was inflicted by negligence on the part of her owner. She was picked up by Animal Control with an embedded collar around her neck, that the staff cut away leaving raw flesh exposed. Two of our volunteers went in and got her, took her to our facility to clean her wounds, and found the small rope (bottom right photo) embedded even further in than the collar was. It was so deep it was not noticeable until they began to shave and clean the wound. The fact that she was still able to eat or drink anything is amazing. How much longer she had till a slow death of strangulation/starvation set in, we don't know. Fortunately for her, her owners were careless enough to allow her to run at large so her luck began the day that AC picked her up.
Her life began the moment the two volunteers picked her up from there. She will not go back. One of our rescuers has fallen deeply for this sweet, sweet girl, who was still wagging her tail while in the cage at AC, and will provide her with the life of love and comfort she has always deserved. It is a promise that she made to this girl and that is her name Promise.

ABUSE OF A BASSETT HOUND
This dog was found at one of the local county kill shelters. He would not eat and was too weak to keep his head up. He was flea infested and skin and bones.
Two of our volunteers went in with canned food, heartworm tests, and other supplies on hand to fix him up. He would not touch the canned food and after a heartworm test was performed it was determined that he had such a high concentration of heartworm that he would be dead any day. He was beyond treatment.
An officer was called in and the dog was humanely euthanized.

KITTY ABUSE
The cat pictured was found walking in a ditch full of water. She tried to run from her sick to hunt so her means of survival had, by the look of it, been to drag road kill into her the sickness eating her alive or what she had been living in is unknown.
She was found to be Feline Leukemia positive and given blessed relief through euthanasia. On the ride to the vet's office, so relieved to have a warm lap to sit in, a kind word, and gentle caress, she reached up to her rescuer with her paw, hooked it gently around her neck, and just nuzzled.
She remembered what it was like to have once been warm and loved. Think neglect isn't as bad as abuse? Think again.

PIT BULL ABUSE
This is a pit bull that was one of the fortunate ones in our county. Many are fought and left for dead but this one was taken to the vet. Most of these dogs are left to die and this is considered a sport by some of our residents. High stakes betting take place and generally the dog that stays alive is the winner. The owner of this dog claims that it was hung up in barbed wire but scars from previous injuries tell a different story.

Neglect
These are a couple of cats from a colony that we trapped and did all we could for. It was horrific. The pictures are not so clear that you can really see the open, running sores around this cats neck. His eye is missing due to what we think was a neglected upper respitory infection. This was being spread from cat to cat, and though we did our best, many had to be put down because they were beyond any help.

BUCKET
This is Bucket. She was found with two puppies in a 3x3kennel. The only food or water that I saw in the pen was a banana peel. The kennel must not have been cleaned because the area was covered in feces. The owner surrendered the dog to us.
One of our volunteers immediately took Bucket and the two pups to the vet and determined that she was mal-nourished and had a terrible case of intestinal worms.
With food water and TLC, Bucket grew into a strong healthy Dalmatian that will never have to suffer again. She is now in her forever home.

A BABY STORY
Once again it is negligence that contributed to the agony of the puppy in the photos below. One of our volunteers was on a back road when a mother dog and two of her very small puppies walked out in front of her. The puppies were trying to suckle as mamma was crossing the road. Our volunteer stopped, guided the mother dog to the safety of a front yard and heard the cries of another puppy. Assuming that the pup had lost it's mom, and was crying for her, what she found was a horrifying shock. The puppy was to the side of the road, a little up in the same yard, on his back squirming. When the little guy was flipped over, he was literally being eaten alive by maggots.
From between his front shoulders all the way down his back were thousands. Immediately the dog was rushed to the vets office, was examined by two veterinarians that pronounced there was nothing that could be done. Euthanasia was the only called in the meantime. She called Animal Control began taking photos. One of the staff at AC immediately came over and followed the volunteer to the home where the mother and pups were. No one was at the residence so a notice was left in regard to the dogs. Since the dogs were at large, it is not for certain that this was the home of the owners. The animals were then picked up. The number of maggots, and as deeply as he had been eaten into verify that the little guy had been infested for some time and no one in the home cared enough to check on him. When or if the owners actually care enough to come and get the dogs charges will then be pressed. Imagine, if you will, driving down the road trying to comfort a small puppy writhing, crying, hiding his face in the crook of your neck and whimpering in agony, crawling with maggots. It has caused nightmares and will never be forgotten.
